• Annual menaion with scenes from the Resurrection and the Passion of Christ

    The central part of the the mullion depicts scenes from the Passion of Christ and the Ressurection. The New Testament scenes frame the images of the saints in the order of the months they are honored. The Menaion is framed by iconographic versions of the icons of the Holy Virgin.

    The icon has eight tiers. Each tier represents 9 Gospel scenes.
  • Savior Enthroned

    Jesus is depicted sitting on the throne, His left hand is holding the Gospel and His right hand is raised in a gesture of blessing. Two angels are holding the instruments of His sufferings close to His face. Martha and Mary Magdalene are depicted at His feet.
  • Scenes from Gospels (Earthly Life of Christ)

    The icon depicts New Testament scenes from the life of Jesus Christ. A distinctive feature of this icon is that the scenes begin from the Baptism rather than from the Good News or the mid-Pentecost. Besides, more than half of the composition is dedicated to the Passion of Christ, the Twelve Feasts; miracles and other events are considerably less represented. And finally, the scenes are not depicted in historical sequence.

    The center of the icon represents the scene of the Resurrection – the Descent into Hell in an expanded iconographic redaction noted for a detailed interpretation of the key event, which includes additional episodes. The basic part of the centerpiece depicts the frontal figure of Jesus Christ standing on the broken gates of hell, Adam and Eve rising from the graves and a group of prophets led by John the Baptist to the right of the Savior.

    The triptych belongs to the folding boxes type with a keel-shaped finial. In accordance with tradition, the upper parts of the leaves represent the Annunciation scene; under them are the festival scenes such as the Nativity of the Mother of God, the Entry into the Temple, the Nativity of Christ, the Meeting of Our Lord, the Epiphany, the Resurrection of Lazar, the Entry into Jerusalem, the Transfiguration (left), the Crucifixion, the Descent from the Cross, the Resurrection – the Descent to Hell, the Myrrh-Bearing Women at the Holy Sepulcher, the Confession of Saint Thomas, the Ascension, the Holy Trinity, the Dormition of the Mother of God (right). The finial of the upper part shows the rare composition of Agnus Dei symbolically depicting the redemptive sacrifice of Christ for the sins of the whole world. It also shows the Infant Christ lying on the discos and blessed with rhipidia that the attending angels are holding in hands. Inside the box is an icon with a built-in 16th century bony medallion icon depicting the Mother of God Hodegetria, set in a filigree frame. Next to it are the angels, surrounded by eight icons of the Mother of God in different iconographic variants. The central icon imitates the engraving of eight images of the Theotokos – one of the leaves created by the Moscow engraver Gregory Tepchegorsky who worked in 1702-1718 and was included in different collections of the first third of the 18th century. Not only did Tepchegorsky use the images of famous Russian icons, but he also authored a number of icons, such as the Tervansky icon, which in Russia was later associated with the Terebinsky pustyn (hermitage) in the Tverskoi region.

  • Resurrection – the Descent into Hell

    The centerpiece depicts the Resurrection – the Descent into Hell in the most detailed iconographic version of this subject with some additional motives included. The centre of the icon represents Christ in Majesty, staying on the broken gates of hell and holding the hand of Adam rising from his grave followed by the procession of righteous people in white clothes. To the left of Christ, above, is another procession consisting of the prophets and the forefathers depicted according to the tradition (some prophets hold the symbols of their prophecies). This procession is headed by John the Baptist, David and Solomon.

    In the center of the icon is the scene of the Resurrection of Christ. Jesus is depicted wearing white vestments, his hands are raised in a benedictory gesture. On either side of Him are the seated angels. The central composition is surrounded by twelve border scenes of the feasts.

    The icon with two leaves connected with the central panel with leather stripes. Inside the central panel is a nacreshell with carved images on the inward side: The Mother of God of the Sign (the image is placed inside an inscription of the prayer «Достойно есть…» (It is Truly Meet).

    In the centerpiece is depicted the Ascension (iconographic type of the Descent into Hell) including Christ crushing the gates of Hell and leading Adam and Eve out of it, and also John the Forerunner, the Old Testament tsars and prophets against the background of symmetric hills.

    In the centerpiece is a multi-figured composition of The Elevation of the Cross. The border scenes and corners of the centerpiece depict the evangelists. On the upper left margin is John the Evangelist on Pathmos Island with his disciple Prochorous. At the right upper corner is Matthew the Evangelist.
