  • Resurrection of Lazarus

The icon belongs to an abridged iconographic variant. Except Christ, Lazar, the apostles, Jews, Martha and Maria, there is just one servant opening the grave. Against the background, between two hills, in chambers inside Jerusalem, are the Jews who didn’t believe in Christ and “decided to kill him”. Among the unusual features of this icon are the chambers behind Christ’s back, possibly Bethany, sarcophagus with the standing Lazarus, and a round stone nearby. The two latter details possibly appeared on the analogy of the icons of the Myrrh-Bearing Women at the Holy Sepulcher, symbolically depicting the Resurrection of Christ, whose prototype was the Raising of Lazarus.

Figures of the apostles are shown behind Christ. On the background is represented the group of Hebrews between the rocks near the architecture of Bethany.

Before the Savior in the right part of the icon are represented Lazarus in the tomb, two adolescents removing the lid and also the man servant unfolding the burial shrouds.
