A famous Old Believer engraver, who worked in a copper foundry in the Lefortovo district in Moscow in the second half of the 19th – the early 20th century.
His name was established only in the beginning of the 1990s. The analysis of a great number of cast copper objects produced by the Muscovite foundries revealed a few castings bearing a full or partial name of the master. Among them are icons of The Old Testament Trinity, The Dormition of the Holy Virgin and a tetraptych of The Twelve Feasts dated 1883.
Many of his works that widely circulated in Russia carry different versions of the master’s own monogram “M.R.S.Kh”, “R.S.Kh.” and “R.Kh” and the dates 1872, 1879, 1883, 1884, 1885, 1886. The same “identification marks” can be seen on many of his copper icons, such as The Dormition, The Mother of God Joy of All Who Sorrow, The Martyrs Cyric and Julitta with selected saints, the Saints Gregory the Theologian, Basil the Great and John the Chrysostom and many others now kept in Russian and foreign museums and private collections.
