The icon of the Holy Trinity Zyrianskaya is one of the few surviving evidences of the missionary activity by St. Stephan, bishop of Perm (1383—1396), who converted to Orthodox Christianity paganish Komi-Zyrian people and created Zyrian writing system. Against a white background in the bottom part of the central part is the most ancient inscription written in Perm (Zyrian) language. It is a fragment of the Book of Genesis about the presentation of the Lord to forefather Abraham by the oaks of Mamre. Against each angel is an inscription in Zyrian language: Son (to the left of the viewer), Father (in the center) and Spirit (to the right). Such inscriptions are unique for the Trinity icons.

This Holy Trinity image is painted in line with the iconographic pattern represented on Andrei Rublyov icons but does not imitate it (in particular, the figures of the angels don’t constitute an ideal circle, while their heads are almost on the same level). Among the features indicating a deviation from the Rublyov iconography are the lack of clavus on the chiton of the central angel, three bowls instead of one, and the breads, spoons and knives on the table, certain details suggest association with the iconographic tradition of the second half of the 16th century. These are luxurious chambers crowned with a hint roof and frontons, a complex form of the dinner with an arcade in the foundation, the angels’ wings, represented three-dimensionally and with the rolled edges, and the positioning of the feet of the right and the left angels (their feet stand on the pedestal on the same level, not at different height, like on Rublyov’s icons). A fairly rare motif is an image of the Mamre oak with the five-pointed star-shaped crown right above the figure of the central angel.

The scene of silent conversation between the three angels is brilliantly conveyed by the iconographer through the gestures of their hands: the left angel (God the Father) is blessing the sacrificial chalice-bowl, the central angel (God the Son) is ready to accept it with his hand, in a symbolic position of the fingers, pulled down, and the pose showing a filial obedience to his Father’s will and the readiness for self-sacrifice; the right angel the Holy Spirit) appears to assert the high meaning of the sacrificial and all-forgiving love. Unlike many other compositions of this kind, there is only one chalice with the calf’s head on the table – the symbol of the New Testament’s lamb. The silhouette of the chalice rhythmically repeats itself in the outlines of the inner contours of the left and the right angels constituting a big Eucharist chalice inside which is the central angel – Jesus Christ.

In the centre of the composition are shown three angels seated around the table throne set out for a meal. To their right and to their left stand Abraham and Sarah with the vials in their hands (Abraham’s vial has a head of a calf inside and Sarah’s – the loaves). The depiction of the angels’ repast is complemented by a number of scenes illustrating the Old Testament story of the Hospitality of Abraham – from the meeting of Abraham and three angels near the oak of Mamre to the angels’ leaving for Sodom. Three of these scenes are represented above the central scene, to the right: Abraham is shown seated in the chambers under the oak tree waiting for the wanderers; Abraham welcomes the three angels, falls down before their feet and asks them in for the repast: Abraham washes the angels’ feet demonstrating his hospitality. In the upper left corner are represented the servant immolating the calf for the repast and Sarah beating dough for the loaves. Lower is shown Sarah in the (hip roof building) listening to the conversation of Abraham and one of the angels. The final conversation of Abraham and God is represented in the upper right corner of the icon.
