This iconographic variant includes two depictions of Christ, dead – from the “Crucifxion” and Christ Who – in “Savior Not Made by Hands”. At the sides of crucified Christ are the Mother of God and John the Theologian. This composition can be traced back to some icon of the first half of the 14th century that was honored and has not survived (which in its turn can be traced back to some Byzantine icon).
