Resurrection of Christ – Descent into Hell with the scenes of Christ’s sufferings

Origin: From the church commemorating Saint Nicholas (1673) in the village of Dimitrievo, Cherepovetskiy district, Novgorodskaya region (now Cherepovetskiy district, Vologodskaya region)

The centerpiece shows the composition “the Resurrection of Christ – the Descent into Hell” in the most detailed iconographic version of this subject with some additional motives included. In the center of the upper part of the icon is represented the Resurrection of Christ (“the Rising from the tomb” version). Above, the scene of the «Ascension» is represented. To the left are shown the Proofing of Apostle Thomas, the Appearance of an angel to the Myrrh-bearers, Christ appears before St. Mary Magdalene, St. Peter before the empty tomb of the Lord. To the right are the Evening Meeting in Emmaus, the conversation of the Generous Robber with Elijah and Enoch in Paradise. In the lower part of the icon is the composition «Descent into Hell», which includes figures of angels, who are chaining Satan and the saints marching to Heaven. In the lower right corner is depicted Christ appearing before the apostles at the Sea of Tiberias.
