In general the iconographical type of the icon corresponds to the tradition and includes the depictions of the Mother of God on the deathbed, the apostles, Christ in Majesty with the soul of the Holy Virgin in His hands and also the scene of severing the hands of the impious Aufonius who tried to overthrow the deathbed of Our Lady. Among the interceding can be distinguished the figures of the unknown saint (the left group of the apostles) in the vestment decorated with the crosses holding the Gospel book in his hands and the angel standing at the deathbed of the Mother of God to the right. Apostles John the Theologian and Paul standing close to the deathbed are represented in the centre of the composition before the figure of Christ. The depiction of Aufonius as a long-haired adolescent instead of the elder with the Hebrew headwear is unusual.
