Alexis, the metropolitan of Moscow

Date: XV century. Second half of the 15th c.
Origin: From the Pokrov monastery in Suzdal.
Material: Wood, levkas, tempera, canvas
Dimensions: height 28 cm, width 21 cm
Waist-length depiction of the metropolitan Alexis, his right hand raised in a gesture of blessing before his chest and his left hand holds the Gospel. The saint is dressed in the white klobuk and sakkos-polystaurion. The icon has an inscription which makes it unique: «Чюд(отворец) Алексии», where the metropolitan is not called saint and the word «чюдотворец» which normally goes after the name is put before it.
