Archangel Gabriel. From the Deesis (“Vysotsky”) row

Iconography:  Gabriel, archangel

Date: XIV century. 1387–1395.

Iconographic school/art center:  Constantinople.

Origin: From the Church of the Conception of the Holy Virgin of the Vysotsky Monastery in Serpukhov. The church had received the icons from Constantinople in the 1380s-1390s.

Material: Wood, tempera

Dimensions:  height 146 cm, width 106 cm

The half-length figure of the Archangel is turned to the right. His head is slightly inclined; with his right hand he holds the measuring rod, his left hand is prayerfully directed to the Savior.
