Our Lady of Murom

Iconography:  Muromskaya icon of the Mother of God

Date: XIX century. The late 19th – early 20th c.

Material: Wood, tempera

Dimensions:  height 38 cm, width 31 cm

The Mother of God is shown turning her head to the right, towards the Infant Christ whom she holds with both hands. The Infant is half-lying on His Mother’s arms touching her chin with His right hand with a blessing gesture. With his right hand he holds a scroll reading “Судъ судитъ судья праведный”. On the borders are the figures of the saints – St. Basil of Parium (left) and the martyr Mariamna (right). The icon is painted on gold, with carving on levkas imitating a precious case with enameled ornamentation. On the bottom icon border is the text of Troparion to Murom’s icon of the Holy Virgin. 


The origin is not known. According to records, the icon was deposited in the Museum in 1982.
