Our Lady of Tolga
Iconography: Tolgsk icon of the Mother of God
Date: XIV century. 1314
Iconographic school/art center: Rostov (?), Yaroslavl (?)
Origin: From the Cathedral of the Presentation in the Temple of the Tolgski Monastery.
Material: Wood, levkas, tempera
Dimensions: height 61 cm, width 48 cm
The icon represents the half-length figure of the Holy Virgin, and the sitting figure of Jesus Christ. The position of the Holy Virgin’s arms is changed: it was borrowed from the prototype of Our Lady of Vladimir. To make the Holy Virgin look more sorrowful the icon-painter made a special emphasis on her eyes. The icon of Our Lady of Tolga is currently kept in the Cathedral of the Presentation in the Temple of the Tolgski Monastery, where it was deposited in custody, being part of Yaroslavl art museum’s collections.
