The centerpiece represents shoulder-length depiction of saint Nicholas, above him there is Deesis. To his left, to his right and underneath are the Selected Saints.

Our Lady of the Sign with the Selected Saints (St. Barlaam of Khoutyn, St. John the “Almoner”, St. Parasceva, surnamed “Friday” and St. Anastasia).

In the center is Jesus Christ seated on the throne, blessing with his right hand and holding a closed Gospel book lying on His lap. He is flanked by the Mother of God and John the Baptist with their hands raised in blessing; behind them, in the second row, are the martyrs Barbara and Parasceva.

In the center of the icon are three female martyrs that were particularly venerated in Pskov. In the center is the figure Barbara, the saint patroness of the church, where the icon comes from, flanked by Parasceva Pyatnitsa and Juliana. The icon belongs to the “zhitiyny” (hagiographic) type of the icons, in which the scenes of the saint’s life go one after another without being strictly divided into panels, with one theme smoothly following another. The scenes are dedicated to the lives of SS Barbara and Juliana. The accompanying titles, partially lost, were read and restored by A.N.Ovchinnikov in accordance with the Life of the Saints texts.

The icon represents the half-length figure of Great Martyr St. Paraskeva Pyatnitsa, portrayed in a frontal pose. In her right hand she holds the octangular martyrdom cross, and in her right, hidden under the wrinkles of her clothes, an alabaster (a jar with myrrh). This jar, a healer’s attribute, is rarely encountered in the iconography of Paraskeva, which is usually portrayed with a cross and scroll.

Saint Paraskeva is shown full-length, in a red cloak, a white sudarium and a dark-blue chiton with golden assist. She is holding a cross in her raised right hand and an unfolded scroll in her right reading the first words of the Symbol of Faith: “Верую во еди //наго Б (о) га Отца // Вседержите//ля творца // не (е)бу и земли // видимым // же всемъ //и невиди // мым и во // единаго”. Above Paraskeva are hovering angels obviously crowning her with the crown of martyrdom (the pictorial image is covered with an engraved crown). In the upper border is an image of the Savior Not Made by Hands with two angels holding a headscarf. The icon is covered with a gilded silver basma with a small pattern. In the center are flowers painted in rhombs with vegetable ornamentation in the margins. On either side of the saint’s figure are silver plates with inscriptions; the gilded crowns and a crescent collar and a small carved pattern.

The half-length figure of St. Paraskeva; in her left hand she is holding a cross; with her left hand she supports a scroll unfolded upward, with the first words of the Symbol of Faith. Quite interesting is an inscription on either side of the saint interpreting her Greek name Paraskeva as a nickname and her nickname as a name “С (вя)тая Пятница Христова м (у)ч(е)ница нарицаемая // Порасковея”. The icon is noted for its contrast color solution – a red-orange cloak, white sudarium and dark-blue, almost black, chiton against a dark-blue background. The saint’s features are distinguished by round brows, deep eyes and thin nose.

The full-length figures of three martyrs. In the center is St. Barbara standing in a frontal pose with a black martyr’s cross in her right hand; her left hand is raised at the breast level, the palm is open. To her right is St. Paraskeva, standing in a three-quarter turn to Barbara; to her left stands St. Juliana, her head is turned to St. Barbara. Both martyrs hold white eight-pointed crosses with their right hands. Above Barbara, in a semi-circle of heaven, is Christ Emmanuel in a red vestment, blessing with both hands. To either side of a semi-circle of heaven, between the martyrs’ haloes, are two half-figures of the Archangels Michael and Gabriel.

The centerpiece shows the shoulder-length depiction of saint Nicholas against the red background. He is represented in a frontal pose in the attire of hierarch, dark ochroid phelonion with the hem decorated with pearls near collar and omophorion are partially visible. Borders of the icon represent Deesis and waist-length figures of the selected saints.

In the center is the full-length figure of St. Paraskeva Pyatnitsa with a cross and unfolded scroll in hands. The centerpiece is surrounded by fourteen border scenes.

The icon depicts the full-length figures of the four saints: saint Nicholas, archdeacon Stephen, priest-martyrs Blasius and Clement, interceding with the image of Our Lady of the Sign. In the upper part of the composition to the right and to the left of the Mother of God are shown half-figures of martyresses Parasceva named “Friday” and Anastasia. -
Parasceva is shown frontally, waist-length. The saint is depicted in the red mantle of the martyress with the white kerchief on her head. The angels holding the crosses in their hands are putting the effulgent martyrs’ wreath on her head. In her right hand she is holding the eight-pointed cross, in her left hand – the scroll with the initial words of the Symbol of Faith text.

In the centerpiece is represented the great martyress Parasceva named “Friday” full-length with the hands spread apart. In her right hand she holds a cross and in her left hand – the unfolded scroll with the first words of the Symbol of Faith. The centerpiece is surrounded by 12 border scenes from the life of the great martyress. Border scenes: 1. The saint martyress Parasceva preaches Christianity to the pagans 2. St. Parasceva seized by the pagans stands before the governor 3. St. Parasceva being tortured by the ox tendons 4. St. Parasceva healed after the tortures faces the governor again 5. St. Parasceva being tortured by the iron scrapers 6. The “effulgent woman” appears to St. Parasceva in prison and heals her wounds 7. Breaking the idols by the prayer of St. Parasceva 8. Nicholas the Wonderworker, St., with the Deesis and the Selected Saints
The centerpiece shows the waist-length depiction of St. Nicholas. On the upper border of the icon is represented Deesis with the image of Savior Not Made by Hands in the centre. At the sides of the Savior are represented waist-length depictions of the Mother of God, John the Forerunner and archangels Michael and Gabriel. At the sides of the central image of Nicholas the Wonderworker are shown the half-figures of great forefathers Basil the Great and Gregory the Theologian, apostles Peter and Paul , healers Cosmas and Damian. In the lower part of the centerpiece are the depictions of protomartyr archdeacon Stephen, great martyrs Parasceva, Catherine and Barbara and also martyr Menas. -
Yaroslavl icon of the Mother of God, with the Deesis tier and the Selected Saints
In the centerpiece is shown the Mother of God with the Divine Child Whose right hand seems to support the chin of Our Lady and His left hand is holding a folded scroll which makes this icon different from the other Yaroslavl icons of the Mother of God where the left hand of the Divine Child holds the edge of Her omophoion. On the upper border of the icon is depicted Deesis with the Savior Not Made by Hands in the centre – the feature of many northern icons. Deesis includes the depictions of saint Nicholas the Wonderworker (instead of the Holy Virgin), prophet John the Forerunner, archangels Michael and Gabriel. On the left and on the right borders below and on the lower border are shown the waist-length frontal depictions of saint John the Goldenmouth, Apostle John the Theologian, great martyrs Parasceva named “Friday” and Barbara and great martyr Demetrius.
